Very exciting and rare opportunity to bid on Aubusson tapestries designed by Sonia Delaunay at the Piasa Auction House in Paris on April 19, 2016.

Many well known 20th century artists such as Leger, Picasso and Calder worked with the most prestigious French Tapestry manufacturers to make fabulous and rare tapestries. Typically these tapestries were made in editions of 6 plus two artists proofs. These tapestries rarely come on the market and you should go on the PIASA (piasa.fr) website for further information.

Artist Designed Rugs

Artist designed rugs, wall hangings and tapestries are very appealing and undervalued when compared to their art.

Many famous artists designed wall hangings, tapestries and rugs during their career. The maker of the rug is as important as the artist when determining price. Important French weavers, most notably Pinton, made fine art tapestries for these and other artists. Prices are higher for rugs made by these manufacturers and they often sell for over $100,000 dollars. Calder, De Saint Phalle and others worked with artisans in Nicaragua and Guatemala and manufactured pieces in jute or maguey fiber. These sell for much less usually between $ 2000-5000 dollars.

Several artist designed rugs are being auctioned at the David Rago Modern Auction(www.ragoarts.com<http://www.ragoarts.com>) on February 28th, 2016. The auction includes lots designed by Henry Matisse, Alexander Calder and Niki De Saint Phalle.
